U.S. Census Report Finds Divorce Rates Lower in Northeast

In a recently-released report, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that in recent years, the rates of divorce among U.S. couples have become highest in the southern United States – and lowest in northeastern states like New Hampshire, according to an article in The Huffington Post.

The report is based on data the Census Bureau collected in its 2009 American Community Survey. Based on the information collected in the survey, the Census Bureau found that the average rate of divorce in the U.S. is similar for both men and women. In 2009, an average of 9.2 men in 1000 and 9.7 women in 1000 had been divorced at least once. These numbers were higher in the south, where the divorce rate averages 10.2 per 1000 men and 11.1 per 1000 women.

In the Northeast, however, the average divorce rate is lower than both the rate in the South and the national average. When taken together, the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania had an average divorce rate of 7.2 per 1000 men and 7.7 per 1000 women in 2009. On average, these states are lower individually as well, although Maine is an exception – its divorce rates in 2009 for both men and women put it in the top 10 among U.S. states.
