Although Labor Day has come and gone, there will still be hundreds of motorcycles on the roads as we move into fall.  There are some things to keep in mind both as a motorcyclist as well as a vehicle driver.

Bikers, remember to wear protective equipment.  This includes a helmet, eye protection, ear protection, jackets, gloves, riding pants, and boots.  In the event of a crash, these safety  items may not only help to protect your skin from significant road rash, they could save your life.

Motorcycle Accidents & Road Rash Injuries

New Hampshire Motorcycle Attorneys

A motorcycle accident can result in serious and debilitating injuries. Even when traveling at relatively low speeds, motorcyclists face the potential for catastrophic injuries.  Road rash is one of the most commonly sustained injuries from a motorcycle crash. Depending on the severity of the injury, road rash can result in a lengthy period of rehabilitation along with permanent and disfiguring scarring.

Motorcycle-Only Roadside Checkpoints

Nationwide, state and local governments continue to try to implement motorcycle-only checkpoints that target motorcyclists for inspection by law enforcement officers. Many of these motorcycle-only checkpoints are funded by grants from the federal government through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Opponents argue that these motorcycle-only stops unfairly target and discriminate against motorcyclists.

Advocates for the motorcycle checkpoints say that these stops are in the public’s best interest and designed to look for safety violations.  As such, they allow for motorcyclists to be pulled over by law enforcement, even when they have violated no laws or rules of the road.  One such Grant, in the amount of $70,000, was awarded to the State of Georgia. The Georgia Department of Public Safety stated that the motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints will be utilized to check for proper licensing, DOT helmets, alcohol usage, valid tags, as well the general operating condition of the motorcycle.

In a Split Second-Everything Changes. A View From Behind The Handlebars

Ask any seasoned motorcyclist about their observations from behind the handlebars, and you will hear a somber tale of distracted motorists.  Our roadways are filled with distracted drivers who are paying attention to everything, except driving. The motorcycle lawyers at Tenn And Tenn, P.A. in Manchester, NH have handled many motorcycle collisions this year.  As motorcycle riders ourselves, we know first-hand both the joys and perils of motorcycling.motorcyclecropped

The view from behind the handlebars of a motorcycle is both exhilarating and alarming. As a veteran motorcyclist, I ride in a state of hyper-alertness.  Constantly watching other drivers, inspecting roadway conditions, and attempting to anticipate unforeseen events, is a daily chore of a motorcycle rider. And what we see from behind the handlebars is scary: Drivers on cell phones-talking-texting-and emailing; Drivers turned backwards disciplining children in the back of the car; Drivers with a sandwich in one hand and a beverage in the other, while they guide their car with their knee.  And, despite our best efforts to observe everything and react appropriately-in a split second-everything can change.

Another motorcycle riding season has arrived.  Every day, thousands of motorcyclists will hit the open road for summer fun, packed with motorcycle rallies, bike races, bike nights, group rides and scenic tours. The Motorcycle Accident  Lawyers at Tenn And Tenn, P.A. remind you to spend a few minutes to review your motorcycle insurance policy. Having ample motorcycle insurance coverage will help protect you and your passenger if you’re involved in a motorcycle accident.Insurance Policy

As motorcycle insurance is not required in New Hampshire, many riders opt to go without coverage. Our Iron Horse Lawyers don’t recommend this course of action.  Basic motorcycle insurance coverage is affordable and offers some protection in the event of a motorcycle crash. Liability insurance, uninsured motorist coverage, property damage and medical payments coverage are basic coverage options that every motorcyclist should have.

Minimum insurance coverage is better than no insurance coverage. But, minimum coverage will not be sufficient to protect your financial wellbeing in the long run. The NH minimum bodily injury limits are $25,000. Our NH personal Injury Attorneys recommend that you carry at least $100,000/$300,000. To protect yourself against Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists, you should maintain a minimum of $100,000 coverage per person, and $300,000 per occurrence. Medical insurance is available to cover the costs of your doctors and hospital bills. Consider carrying at least $10,000 of medical payments coverage.
