NHTSA Identifies Key New Hampshire Motorcycle Safety Issues

In a recent report, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified several key motorcycle safety issues for New Hampshire legislators, police officers, and motorcyclists to focus on. The overall goal is to improve motorcycle safety as measured by decreases in motorcycle accidents, especially those that cause injury or death.

Safety issues that New Hampshire bikers should consider include:

  • Helmet use. New Hampshire law doesn’t require adult motorcyclists to wear helmets, but helmets can prevent death and decrease the risk of serious injuries, especially those to the head, face, and neck.
  • Sober riding. Motorcycle accidents in which alcohol is a factor result in more serious injuries to everyone involved. Bikers can’t control whether others are making smart alcohol choices, but they can control whether or not they ride sober themselves.
  • Motorcycle safety coursesNH motorcycle safety courses currently aren’t required in New Hampshire if you can pass the license test without them, but riders who have had at least one safety course are less likely to be killed in a crash. Safety courses teach avoidance maneuvers and other skills that can literally save a biker’s life.
