New Hampshire Declared One of Safest Driving States, Texting Law Effective in 2010

A recent news article posted on forbes.com reveals that New Hampshire, along with Illinois and Oregon, is one of three states that will adopt new traffic laws in January 2010 forbidding text messaging while driving. According to AAA, there are as many as 8,000 daily car crashes caused by distracted drivers across the country. AAA also supports that laws prohibiting text messaging greatly aid in decreasing the number of accidents that occur as a result of texting. The Auto Club of Southern California, for example, cites a 70% decrease in the number of on-the-road texts that have been sent via motorists since the texting ban went into effect in California. This decrease has undoubtedly led to fewer traffic accidents resulting from cell phone texting use.

The article mentions that New Hampshire, while it has been listed as one of the safest states for motorists, does not even have primary or secondary seatbelt laws in place. This may be seen as an indication that driving practice may have less to do with laws and more to do with driver awareness and safe decision-making. However, the numbers supporting the dangers associated with texting and driving are quite significant.
