Chrysler and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently announced a recall of Jeep Liberty vehicles manufactured in model years 2004 and 2005, according to the NHTSA’s recall website, safercar.gov. The recall covers twenty states, including New Hampshire and its neighbors in New England.
The vehicles are being recalled because corrosion from rust and salt can cause the vehicle’s rear lower control arms to fail, increasing the risk of serious accidents by impairing the driver’s ability to control the Jeep. Jeep Liberty owners can take their vehicles to the dealer for a repair or can contact the NHTSA via its website for more information on getting the safety problem fixed. Since the control arms may give way without warning or signs of weakening, the NHTSA warns drivers to get their vehicles looked at even if they don’t think anything is wrong.
The NHTSA has received 13 complaints about control arm failure caused by salt or rust corrosion. All the reports came from“salt belt” states or states where winter road conditions expose vehicles to the corrosive effects of road salt, de-icing chemicals, and other compounds used to clear snow and ice from the roads.
