New Hampshire Man Hospitalized after ATV Accident

A man from Gilford fell off his all-terrain vehicle (ATV) on July 20, according to an article on UnionLeader.com. The man was riding on his ATV during the day and was rescued after his family members reported him missing when he was six hours late coming home. He was discovered on Whiteface Mountain, about 1,500 feet from the summit, around 7:30 p.m. His accident reportedly occurred around 11 a.m., but he was unable to call for help. He had respiratory problems when he was found.

Members of area fire and rescue departments were able to help move the man to the summit of the mountain. A helicopter then used a makeshift landing area to land the helicopter. It transported the accident victim to an area hospital around 10 p.m.

Although ATVs can be a lot of fun, they can be dangerous as well. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that in 2007, ATVs were responsible for 150,900 accidents which required emergency medical treatment. In 2003, 621 riders were killed in ATV accidents.

ATVs can be especially dangerous for children. One-third of all fatalities from ATV accidents over a 20 year period involved children under age 16. About 37 percent of ATV injury-causing accidents involved riders under age 16.
