A motorcyclist from Stoneham, New Hampshire suffered critical injuries recently when a motorist failed to yield the right of way at a Candia intersection, causing a crash. The biker was attempting to pass through the intersection of Old Candia Road and Adams Road on a weekend afternoon when the accident occurred.
A car trying to make a left turn onto Old Candia Road did not stop to let the motorcycle clear the intersection. Instead, the vehicle collided with the motorcycle as it turned left, causing serious injury to its rider. The motorcyclist was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was last reported as being in critical condition.
The driver of the car, a Londonderry resident, was not injured. Police are still investigating the crash and have not said whether the car’s driver will receive a ticket or face stricter criminal charges.
Failing to yield the right of way occurs when a driver doesn’t slow down or stop at an intersection to allow another driver to travel safely through the intersection when they have a green light, or reached the intersection first. The mistake may be due to distraction, to a lack of familiarity with the intersection, or due to willful ignorance or a desire to “beat” the other driver. Whatever the cause, however, failing to yield the right of way can result in serious injuries, especially when the resulting crash involves a motorcycle.
