Bus Accident Injuries Decrease Nationwide From 1988-2008

By admin on June 14, 2011

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, or FMCSA, keeps track of accidents, breakdowns, and other safety-related events that happen to commercial vehicles in the U.S. each year, including passenger buses. Recently, FMCSA’s bus accident statistics have painted an overall picture of decreased accidents and increased safety on passenger buses throughout the last two decades.

First, the total number of injuries suffered in bus accidents has decreased since 1988. In that year, about 30,000 people were injured in bus accidents nationwide. By 2008, however, that number had dropped to about 24,000 people. While individual years between 1988 and 2008 saw higher injury rates than others, overall the total number of injuries has declined over the past twenty years, indicating that passenger bus travel is safer than it once was.

In addition to the total number of bus accidents going down, the rate of accidents also went down. Buses now travel more miles with fewer accidents than they did in 1988. In that year, about 556 people were injured for every 100 million miles passenger buses travelled. By contrast, 2008 saw only 343 people injured per 100 million miles travelled.

Although bus accidents have decreased in recent years, too many people are still injured in bus crashes. New Hampshire Tour Bus Crash Leaves 23 Injured

By admin on April 20, 2011

Nearly two dozen passengers were injured recently when a tour bus rolled over into the median of Interstate 93 near Littleton, according to an article in The Boston Globe. The bus was transporting tourists from Quebec to Boston on the snow-covered interstate when the accident happened. Rescue workers removed five of the passengers from the scene and sent them to the Littleton hospital to be treated for their injuries. The rest of the passengers suffered only minor injuries in the accident and were not taken to a hospital for treatment.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) plans to investigate the accident. The NTSB is looking for answers to two questions:

  1. What caused the bus to tip over in the median? and,
  2. Is this crash connected to two other bus accidents that have occurred in the Northeast during March 2011?

The other accidents include a tour bus accident in the Bronx and one in New Jersey. Both accidents involved passengers on a tour, and both resulted in multiple injuries.

About 11,000 bus accidents each year cause injuries, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Regardless of the type of vehicle, accident injuries cause financial and emotional challenges for you and your family.
